With computers and the
Internet becoming more and more prevalent in our world, the library is
constantly expanding its services to meet the needs of patrons for digital
information and services.
OPLIN and Internet
OPLIN (Ohio Public Library Information Network) provides free, equal access
to information to all citizens of the state of Ohio through public libraries
via a high speed Internet connection. The library has four OPLIN Internet
capable computers, two in Children's Room and two in the Adult Department.
To use OPLIN, a library card is required as well as a signed Patron Policy
for Internet and OPLIN Usage Form must be on file. OPLIN freely provides, at
Ohio Public Libraries, unique reference databases not regularly offered on

Internet Classes
The library provides a free computer classes designed for beginners. The class is usually offered at least
once per month. from Sept-May. Check our
online calendar for upcoming class dates and times.
Computer Basics
This is for the new computer user or student who feels he/she may have
gaps in their essential computer knowledge. Student will learn basic
computer hardware and software terms, and examine the common navigation
elements found in most computer programs. Students will practice using
portable storage devices such as floppy disks, CDs, and/or USB drives. Mouse
skills and computer keyboard layout skills will be included.
Am I Ready
for this Class?
This is the ideal course for the beginning computer user
or student wanting a review before starting a new computer course.
Digital Photography
Although they were practically non-existent 10 years
ago, digital cameras are a staple of modern technology. Digital cameras make
it easy for anyone to print, email, and share pictures with family and
friends. With imaging software, digital photos can easily be manipulated to
fit your personal needs. Cropping, color adjustments, etc. With an average
knowledge of computers, this class is designed to help users learn the
basics of digital camera technology, and the basics of using a digital
camera to take, and transferring to a computer, using Windows XP, a USB

Email Fundamentals
Electronic mail offers the possibility of almost
instantaneously communicating with people around the planet. Class topics
include sending replying, forwarding, and organizing messages. Students will
be using a previously established generic email address to practice with and
be shown how to setup their own account at home, if needed. A student will
learn how to attach files and avoid computer viruses.

Class?
A student enrolling in this class should be familiar with the
basic concepts of working with the Internet. These concepts include the
following; layout of a web browser, web addresses and basic search
techniques. A student should be comfortable navigating through the Windows
environment, including opening and closing programs, using drop-down menus,
and scrolling. Mouse and computer keyboard layout skills are also required.
Students not familiar with these concepts are strongly encouraged to take
Internet Basics and Computer Basics before registering for this class.
File Management
In this class students will learn the necessary
skills to effectively manage the files and folders located on their
computer. Students will practice creating, saving, renaming, and moving
files and folders. Students will also participate in deleting and backing up
files and using the Search Companion to locate files.

Students should be comfortable with the basic concepts of working
with a computer. These concepts include the layout of the Windows desktop
and the basic Windows file structure. Students should be comfortable
navigating through the Windows environment, including opening and closing
programs, using drop-down menus, and scrolling. Mouse skills and an
awareness of the computer keyboard layout are also required. Students not
familiar with these concepts are strongly encouraged to take Computer Basics
before registering for this class.
Internet Basics
Everyday millions of people use the Internet. Isn’t
it time you gave it a try? In this class, a student will learn basic
Internet terms and the features of a web page. The class will learn to
perform Internet searches by using web addresses and search engines. A
student will examine a web directory and will receive practical Internet
security advice. The class will also examine the most effective ways to
print from a website.

in this class should already be familiar with the basic concepts of working

Intro to Microsoft Word 2007
Explore the new design of Word 2007. The Ribbon brings the most popular
commands to the forefront. No need to hunt for things you do all the time.
Another time-saving feature is the Mini toolbar, which displays formatting
commands in the document, right where you want to use them.

Microsoft Word for Beginners – Part 1
Word Processing skills are
almost mandatory in the workplace and extremely useful at home. In this
class, a student will be introduced to the basics of text entry, text
editing, and saving documents. The class will practice formatting and
customizing word documents. A student will discover helpful editing tools.

Students enrolling in this course should
have some familiar with the basic concepts of working with a computer. These
include the layout of the Windows desktop and the basic Windows file
structure. Students should be comfortable navigating through the Windows

Microsoft Word: Applications – Part 2
This course builds upon the
knowledge gained in the Microsoft Word for Beginners. This class is intended
for participants already comfortable with basic text editing and formatting.
This course introduces students to features such as clipart, tables,
bulleted & numbered lists, labels, copy and paste, and other functions that
showcase the practical applications of a word processing program.
Am I
Ready for This Course?
A student enrolling in this course should already
be proficient with the basic text editing and formatting skills in a word
processing program. These skills include inserting and deleting text,
highlighting text, using drop-down menus or toolbars to change fonts and
margins and to open and save documents. Students not comfortable with these
concepts are strongly encouraged to take Word for Beginners and Computer
Basics before registering for this class.
Microsoft Word: Mail Merge – Part 3
The instructor will explain the
mail merge process. Students will create a simple table in Microsoft Word
and learn to merge the names from the table onto name badges. Then using an
Excel data file, students will learn to merge the information from the data
file onto mailing labels and form letters.
Am I Ready for This Course?
Students enrolling in this class should be proficient with the skills
learned in Word for Beginners and Word Applications. These skills include
text editing and formatting, making tables, and creating labels.
Microsoft Excel for Beginners
In this class a student will learn the
basic concepts of working with spreadsheets. A student will also learn how
to navigate in an Excel spreadsheet, enter and delete data, use formulas,
and perform basic formatting.

enrolling in this course should already be familiar with the basic concepts

Microsoft Excel: Creating Charts
In this class a student will learn
about basic chart types using the Chart Wizard, a fast method of creating
simple charts in Excel. He/she will also learn how to modify the chart’s
attributes and print the chart.

enrolling in this class should be familiar with the basics of Excel.
Students should be proficient with the basic text editing and formatting
skills in a word processing program. Students not familiar with these
concepts are strongly encouraged to take, Excel, Word for Beginners, and

Microsoft PowerPoint
PowerPoint is a program used to create visual
presentations, which can incorporate media of various types including
pictures, movies, clipart, music, etc. The instructor will introduce
students to the fundamentals involved in creating slides, using slide
layouts, and design templates. It will also include adding transitions,
backgrounds, and other effects, as well as setting up a show and options for
saving and printing.
Am I Ready for this Course?
Students enrolling
in the class should be comfortable navigating in the Windows environment
(saving, opening, and locating files on the computer) and using menus and
dialog boxes. Students should also possess basic word processing skills
including how to edit and format text, and should have experience working
with clipart and with bullets and lists. Students not comfortable with these
skills are strongly encouraged to take Word Applications, Word for
Beginners, and Computer Basics.
Microsoft Publisher 2007
Learn
how to create signs, fliers, and more. Basic class to introduce you to
the tools used in Microsoft Publisher 2007.
Am I Ready for this Course?
Students enrolling
in the class should be comfortable navigating in the Windows environment
(saving, opening, and locating files on the computer) and using menus and
dialog boxes. Students should also possess basic word processing skills
including how to edit and format text, and should have experience working

Specialty Computer Classes
The following classes are considered informational and may be taught by
non-library staff.
EBay 101
This is an informational class taught by Dennis Stieber, an avid
EBay trader. He will cover topics like category selection, setting up an
account, pricing, photos, shipping and authenticating value. Stieber has
experience dealing in antiques, collectible, household items, agricultural
and equestrian items and selling them on EBay for many years.. He
resides in Norwalk with his wife.
Automated Card Catalog
The library's card catalog is computerized. 8 OPAC terminals are
scattered throughout the Adult and Children's departments, searching for
just about any library material is just a step away. Materials that may be
searched on the terminals include books, magazines, videos, audio cassettes,
audio CDs, games, and puzzles. These materials may be found by using author,
title, subject, or advanced searching methods. In addition, the terminals
will give status information about any library material including if it's on
the shelf, checked out, overdue, its due date, and the number of reserves
placed on it. By requesting a pin number for the automated card catalog at
one of the circulation desks, you can use an OPAC terminal to look up
information on your account including what materials you have checked out,
reserves you placed, fines you may have, and overdue materials you may have.
In addition, the pin number allows you to leave electronic suggestions to
the library management and staff. Finally, if you have a home computer, you
can log on to the library's automated card catalog from the Library's
website by

Adult Department Computer Services
There are 7 computers with Internet access,
Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access) and many more programs to
help patrons with almost every technology need. You need to have a
valid, up to date library card to access any of our library computers.
Children's Room Computer Services
Even Start Computer has programs to assist preschool and kindergarten
age children in reading and spelling. The computer was provided by the local
Even Start organization which promotes literacy.
There are 4 computers with Internet access, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Access) and many more programs to help the young child get
acquainted with the computer. Children 5-17 yrs. old need permission
from their parent/guardian before they can access the library computers with
a valid library card.
Fireland's Computer Club
An organization of computer enthusiasts, ranging from people with little
or no computer experience to the advanced user, meeting to exchange computer
information and ideas. The club meets regularly on the first and third
Mondays of each month from 7:00-8:30pm. The last half of each meeting
features a presentation on a specific topic in the world of computers. Also,
each meeting features a special question & answer period where any computer
question or problem can be raised.
