Five Million Steps: Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail Program

Five Million Steps: Thru-Hiking the Appalachian Trail

Wedneday April 30th, 2014

6:30 PM

Bob (Buckeye Flash) Grau had no hiking experience or gear, when he decided to attempt to thru-hike the entire length of the Appalachian Trail from Georgia to Maine, a distance of 2,181 miles. On his 170-day hike, he traversed 14 states and climbed 270 mountains. The trail is often steep, rocky, and extremely demanding. Less than 25% of aspiring thru-hikers are actually successful in completing the challenging nearly 2,200-mile trip. During the last 380 miles of very treacherous terrain in the White Mountains of New Hampshire and in Maine, his determination was not deterred as he hiked with a broken ankle. After you hear his story and see his photos, you*ll have a real appreciation of his remarkable effort on his journey of hope!

Book Signing to be held after the program. Books will be available for purchase.

Light Refreshments Provided.

TumbleBooks Collection

The Norwalk Public Library is proud to announce the additon of TumbleBooks, TumbleBookCloud and AudioBookCloud to the services available for our patrons.

Click on the correct box to start your reading adventure!

The TumbleBook Premium is a collection of TumbleBooks (animated, talking picture books) with fiction, non-fiction and foreign language titles, Math Stories, Read-Alongs (chapter books with sentence highlighting and narration but no animation), Videos (from National Geographics), TumbleTV which consists of pre-set playlists of a sequence of books and Tumble Puzzles & Games. TumbleBooks are created from existing picture books which we have licensed from children's book publishers and converted to the TumbleBook format.

TumbleBookCloud is a collection of videos and chapter books in categories which include: Ebooks (Shakespeare, poetry, non-fiction, science, history, geography, etc.), Read-Alongs, Graphic Novels, Videos (from National Geographic!), and Audio Books. Our books feature adjustable text sizes, full narration, and a read-along function which highlights text as it is read. These features make TumbleBookCloud a great tool for reluctant readers and ESL students. Plus, all these options can be switched to manual so readers can read at their own pace.

AudioBookCloud allows you to listen to your favorite audio books with just a click of a button. Listen online to audio books in many different categories: fiction, non-fiction, classics and even Spanish language audio books! There are over 1,160 books in the collection and we're always adding more! These books are always available, never on hold, and no need to download. Browse. Click. Listen. It's that easy!
